This easy homemade granola recipe is such a staple granola recipe. It’s super simple and a base granola recipe, leaving room to add in any additional ingredients of your choice like dried fruits, chocolate, or anything else you’d like to add! I always love making homemade granola because the store brands can sometimes have so much added sugar or other ingredients. This way, you can make it from home knowing exactly what you’re including. This granola is perfect to add to a smoothie or yogurt bowl too!

What ingredients you will need to make this easy homemade granola – and substitutions
- Oats. Rolled or quick oats work here, so you can use whatever you have on hand!
- Sunflower Seeds. I love adding in some seeds for an added crunch! You can always swap this for pumpkin seeds if you don’t have sunflower seeds!
- Chia Seeds. Such a great add-in for extra fibre! It’s optional if you’d prefer not to include this in your granola but I highly recommend!
- Hemp Hearts. A great addition to this granola for an extra boost of protein!
- Cinnamon. Who doesn’t love that cinnamon flavour!
- Salt. Just a pinch to bring out all the delicious mix of flavours!
- Nuts. I used a mix of salted almonds, walnuts, and cashews. You can use any nuts you have on hand like pistachios, peanuts, or more!
- Vanilla Extract. Optional but adds so much flavour to this granola!
- Coconut Oil. The melted coconut oil is the wet ingredient that will bind together all the dry ingredients.
- Maple Syrup. I added a small amount of maple syrup to give some sweetness to the granola, and also to help the ingredients stick together.
- Peanut Butter. The peanut butter also really helps the ingredients stick together. You can use any nut or seed butter of your choice.
- Additional Add-ins: chopped dates, chocolate chips, cranberries, raisins, dried apricots, etc. But make sure to add this AFTER the granola has baked, otherwise it will burn in the oven!
Equipment you will use to make homemade granola
- Cutting Board. An essential for chopping the assorted nuts to add to this granola. It may be a bit pricy, but the quality of a cutting board is so important, and you will only need to purchase one great one!
- Chef Knife. When chopping anything, especially nuts, it’s important to use a good knife that does not require extra effort from you. The knife should be doing most of the work!
- Mixing Bowls. I love using my assorted mixing bowls to prep all my ingredients so that baking my granola is a breeze!

Tips on making the best homemade granola
- Pat down well with a spatula. When you transfer the granola to your lined baking tray, make sure you pat it down so it is evenly spread out on your tray. You don’t want the granola to be too thick in the tray so that it can bake evenly.
- Let granola cool completely before breaking into chunks. I know it’s tempting to dive right in and eat this granola, but it’s important for it to be cool before breaking it in chunks. Even if it is slightly warm, the granola can crumble into smaller pieces. If you prefer that, then of course you can break it up, but I recommend waiting!
- Pro tip: Put granola in the freezer. If you really want those large granola chunks, you can put your granola tray in the freezer for about 10-15 minutes after it’s been baked and cooled for 10 minutes. This will speed up the cooling process and make sure you get bigger granola pieces when you break them up!

How to store your homemade granola
Place in an airtight container or jar and store for up to one month in the fridge .
